God’s broken heart

It’s been a long day — waking up in a 2-hour-earlier time zone, attending the last sessions of a conference, and traveling over international boundaries to get back home. I read some of Wild at Heart, by John Eldredge to pass part of the time. One quote I particularly like was:

The ultimate risk anyone ever takes is to love, for as C.S. Lewis says, “Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal.” But God does give it, again and again and again, until he is literally bleeding from it all. God’s willingness to risk is just astounding — far beyond what any of us would do were we in his position” (page 32).

This was a new perspective for me — how vulnerable God makes himself, and how much heartbreak He consequently and continually experiences! I heard HWN today in reflecting on this very relatable quality of God! I’m glad He sees us as worth it, even though we continually reject him!

p.s. here’s how I passed (some of) my time in the Montreal airport…

And here was the final view of Montreal…
